I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to draw your attention to the alarming and deplorable state of human rights in Pakistan, as outlined in the recent UN Human Rights report【1】. As concerned and conscientious British-Pakistanis, we have been actively protesting these injustices; however, we are witnessing shocking incidents of transnational repression. Reports suggest that Pakistani authorities are abducting, torturing, and harassing the families of British protestors of Pakistani origin in an effort to silence dissent and suppress free speech—actions that are entirely unacceptable in a civilized and democratic society【2】【3】.

For example, Noman Iqbal, a UK resident, had his family back home abducted after participating in a protest in London【4】. Sara Mir (Rukhsana)’s mother was abducted, with Pakistani authorities pressuring her to remain silent about the injustices【5】. Shahzad Akbar, a UK resident and former adviser to Imran Khan, was attacked with acid in the UK【6】. Shayan Ali, a protestor in London, had his Pakistani identity card revoked as an act of intimidation【7】. Additionally, Azhar Mashwani, a UK resident and an aide to former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, had his brothers abducted in Pakistan. The abductions were reportedly intended to pressure him into ceasing his activism and support for democratic protests against the Pakistani government. This case, which was raised in the House of Commons in June 2024, highlights the systematic use of transnational repression to intimidate British residents into silence【8】.

Recent events in Islamabad have further underscored the alarming level of state violence in Pakistan. On 26 November 2024, security forces opened fire on tens of thousands of protestors demanding the release of Imran Khan. Reports indicate that at least 17 civilians were killed and hundreds more injured by live ammunition, with hospitals overwhelmed by gunshot victims. Medical staff alleged that authorities confiscated records and prevented post-mortem examinations to cover up the fatalities. Eyewitnesses described the scene as a warzone, with families left traumatized and citizens fearing for their lives【9】【10】.

My family and I now feel threatened for speaking out against these violations that affect our friends, relatives, and neighbors. We fear potential repercussions for exercising our right to protest and for standing in solidarity with those whose freedoms are under attack. Hundreds of your constituents are expressing a deep sense of insecurity that is affecting both their professional lives and mental well-being.

Amnesty International has also reported on widespread human rights violations and abductions in Pakistan, further highlighting the severity of the issue【11】.

This situation is deeply concerning, especially as the National Security Act 2023 includes measures to tackle foreign interference, including transnational repression【12】. In light of this, may I kindly request you to:

Publicly issue a statement of concern.
Write to Foreign Minister David Lammy, FCDO Minister Hamish Falconer, and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, requesting them to raise this issue to ensure it receives the attention it deserves.
Provide the opportunity to meet with you to discuss further details on this pressing issue.
